A Look Back at the History
The roots of Prentis Park stretch back to 1923 when the City of Vermillion first acquired 10 acres of land to develop a public recreation area. The original park plans included an outdoor bandstand, theatre, playgrounds, and, of course, a swimming pool. Vermillion’s first swimming pool opened in 1929, featuring a large pool with a sand beach and a smaller children’s pool, providing 58 years of service to the community.
In 1966, Vermillion’s second pool was unveiled, replacing the original with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a wading pool, and a new bathhouse. This facility served the city for another 48 years, continuing the park’s legacy as a hub for summer fun.
Finally, in 2017, the community welcomed the beautiful new Prentis Plunge Pool, a project overseen by Burbach Aquatics, Inc. (BAI), ensuring the city’s long-standing tradition of aquatic recreation would continue for generations to come.
Looking Forward
A municipal swimming pool is more than just a place to swim—it’s an investment in the future of your city. Facilities like Prentis Plunge bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life for residents, while also attracting visitors and boosting local pride. In Vermillion, Prentis Plunge is a shining example of how investing in recreation can enrich a community for years to come.
